Founder’s Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale
Founder’s Brewing Company, Michigan USA
Scotch ales / wee heavies are quickly becoming one of my favorite styles of beer. Maybe it has something to do with the brutal winter we’ve had here this year, but there’s something hearty and comforting about beers like these in the cold months. Founder’s is one of the bolder breweries to rise to popularity in the past few years, and if there’s one thing you can say about Founder’s, it’s that they specialize in strong, bold beers that aren’t for the faint of heart. What sets Founders apart, is that they consistently impart a complexity of flavors in all of their beers, not matter that the ABV is.
Dirty Bastard pours a dark mahogany color with a thin head. Malty, sweet, and a good amount of bitterness with just a hint of that smoky / peaty flavor of scotch ales. It’s not a terribly thick or heavy beer going down, so it’s a fairly easy-drinker.
If there’s one thing I can fault the Dirty Bastard for, I wish it had just a bit less carbonation.
